Causes of Itchy Scalp

There are times when our scalp gets so itchy and we feel the urge to really scratch it. Eventhough we try to control ourselves, still we have that strong urge to scratch it until the itchiness disappears. The result, our scalp gets flaky and much worse, the skin becomes irritated and painful due to the too much scratching. An itchy scalp is a very irritating and uncomfortable condition. Once we experience it, we do our best to remedy the problem the soonest.
What can be the cause of itchy scalp? There are many causes of this condition. A very common cause are head lice and dandruff. Younger individuals most often get head lice. The part of the scalp where they reside becomes itchy and the tendency to scratch it is increased. However, there are already over the counter shampoos that will help eliminate head lice from our scalp.
Another cause of itchiness is due to dandruff. Dandruff makes our scalp flaky and very itchy. The problem should be given attention very soon so it won’t spread to the other parts of the head. There are also many available dandruff scalp products at your favorite groceries and drugstores.
An itchy scalp may also be due to dry scalp, seborrheic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis. Dry scalp results from harsh hair shampoos, lotions and serum that we apply to our hair. A dry scalp results to itchy scalp just like when we have dry skin. In seborrheic dermatitis, the underlying skin is reddish and shows greasy scales. The itchiness can be moderate to severe. There is no clear known causes of seborrheic dermatitis, however, it said that this skin disease is related to hormones and runs in the family.
